As an old editor once told me, the zoo looks a lot different from the other side of the cage. Their embarrassment is our entertainment.

Okay, my husband just explained to me what "chokin' chickens" means. I'm so embarrassed, but not nearly as embarrassed as Mary Buckelew should have been when she said it in the middle of a county commission meeting.

Langford is not clueless unless he wants to be. For him, reality yesterday and reality today are not always the same thing and not always dependent on each other. He will claim to know everything about a subject one minute and then play dumb the next minute, if that knowledge might get him in trouble. Remember the latest dome debate? In January a 70,000-seat stadium was too big. In February, a 40,000-seat stadium was too small. Some times, I wonder if he realizes that we record things and write things down. If this were a fairy tale it would be Goldilocks and the Schizophrenic Bear.

As for Tommy Spina, he is Rick Spina's cousin and defense attorney, but I don't know how that affects the bill.

Bettye Fine Collins has said that only the county attorney will represent county employees, unless they want to pay for outside counsel from their own pockets. The finance director, Steve Sayler, chose the latter.

What a convoluted mess! When I read about the subpoenas for Computer Help for Kids, I figured anything with Scrushy's fingerprints on it was likely shady. My question re Larry Langford: is he corrupt or just clueless?

I'd love to be a fly on the wall for the commissioners' depositions. Maybe Mary Buckelew will talk about chokin' chickens or hitting her husband upside the head with a frying pan (two of her greatest hits from county commission meetings).

And is Tommy Spina related to Rick Spina? If so, maybe he's giving Rick a family discount for his defense. The county finance director probably has to pay full freight.
