NEWS: Don’t get Left Behind?

By Kyle Whitmire

No Child Left BehindU.S. Rep. Artur Davis, local and state education leaders will meet this evening at Vulcan Park to hold a town hall meeting on No Child Left Behind. The 2001 law passed by the Bush Administration was meant to improve performance and accountability in public schools, but critics claim that it unfairly punishes school systems already strapped for funds and burdened by disadvantaged students. The No Child Left Behind Act is subject to renewal this year, and public officials are taking input from constituents before it comes up for approval. In addition to Davis, speakers and attendees will include Birmingham School Superintendent Stan Mims; Jim Methvin, President of the Alabama Association of School Boards; and Alabama School Board members David Byers and Ella Bell. The meeting begins at 5 p.m. in the Vulcan Park Museum.
