Irrigation now crime against nature
Watering your lawn against Birmingham Water Works Board restrictions will soon be a criminal offense in Birmingham, just as soon as the city publishes the public notice of its new drought ordinance. Passed by the City Council today and soon to be signed by the mayor, the new ordinance imposes tough fines and potential jail time on offenders trying to save their lawns from the on-going drought. Violators of the new ordinance may face up to a $500 fine and 180 days in jail.
The ordinance does not prohibit the use or recycled water or water from other sources, so long as the resident can identify where the water is coming from. Sprinklers are prohibited, but hand watering is allowed two days per week. Even numbered addresses may water on Mondays and Thursdays. Odd numbered addresses may water on Tuesdays and Fridays.
New lawns and landscaping are exempt from the ordinance for 20 days after sodding or installation.
Golf courses may water tees and greens only. Swimming pools and Jacuzzis may be filled once upon installation or once after repairs. And whatever you do, don’t wash your car.
