Election certified: Langford still won

By Kyle Whitmire

Larry LangfordIt’s official. Larry Langford won last week’s Birmingham mayoral election. Tuesday afternoon, the Birmingham Elections Commission counted the qualified provisional ballots — all seven of them.

Voters can cast provisional ballots if their names improperly are left off of voting rolls or if they forget to bring proper identification to the polls. Provisional ballots cast at the wrong voting precinct are invalid under state law.

According to city election officials, 261 provisional ballots were cast last week. Of those, 186 were absentee ballots and 75 were cast at the polls. From all of the 261 ballots, the Jefferson County Registrar’s office certified only nine as legally cast by Birmingham voters. Two of the nine ballots were lost. Of the remaining seven ballots, Langford had three votes and Patrick Cooper had four.
