Indie film alert \’96 The Yacoubian Building

By Glenny Brock

If you’re already in withdrawal from last weekend’s Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, there’s a little relief to be had tonight as the UAB Foreign Film Series continues with a screening of The Yacoubian Building. A 2006 film directed by Marwan Ahmed, The Yacoubian Building is based on the novel of the same name and is set in an art deco apartment building in downtown Cairo. The building was inhabited by rich folks before the 1952 coup that ousted King Farouk, but by the early 1990s, poor families have moved in and begun living in rooftop storage buildings. The rooftop community, basically a modern slum, is somewhat at odds with the Yacoubian building\’92s other inhabitants and the film paints a vivid picture of modern life in urbanized Egypt. One young woman, urged by her mother to remain virginal, deals with sexual advances (in exchange for money and favors) from her boss. An openly homosexual man balances his business needs with his personal. A young man, rejected by the police force because of his father\’92s lowly occupation, flirts with joining a militant Islamic organization. The free film starts at 8 p.m. in the Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. For more information, call 934-4652 or visit www.uab.edu.\

‘The city of perpetual promise.’ Does that mean incessant failure? Or rather, that Birmingham never gives up hope?
