Mountain Brook a future slum?

By Matt Hooper

Not likely. But Businessweek.com did include the over-the-mountain community on a list of currently thriving U.S. cities expected to experience a downturn as the Wall Street crisis, spurred on by the housing and banking collapse, deepens further. Darien, Conn., a commuter feeder for Manhattan where the average (average!) median salary is $168,687, is tops on the top 10 list, followed by a series of more NYC worker enclaves. In the No. 10 spot on that list was Mountain Brook, where the average income is just over $115,000 and nearly 19 percent of the population dabbles in the finance and real estate markets. If the predictions are true, it will be more than just housewives that are desperate over the mountain.
