WEEKLY DIGEST: Oct. 16-23, 2008

By Glenny Brock

Every year about this time, I get Lionel Ritchie’s song “All Night Long” stuck in my head, particularly the part of the chorus where he says “Fiesta! Forever!” Then when Birmingham’s Hispanic cultural festival starts, I forget all about R&B in favor of mariachi and salsa (both music and sauce).\
\
And of course this year’s Fiesta will also provide a few hours’ reprieve from obsessively reading, thinking and talking about the presidential election. Before you go on Saturday, be sure to check the updated electoral college scoreboard, Courtney Haden’s latest musings on pols and polls and Kyle Whitmire reporting from the front lines of the War on Dumb.\
\
The other notable festival happening in Birmingham this weekend is the Vintage Festival at Barber Motorsports Park. Goers to that festival can check out some of the amazing engine and truck collection that belongs to the Southern Vintage Fire Apparatus Association. In a recent interview with the Weekly, SVFAA member and Mountain Brook mayor Terry Oden explained how his organization is seeking a permanent place to display Birmingham’s collection of historic fire-fighting equipment.\
\
Finally, if you’re missing the Pepper Place Market, take heart \’97 there are still a few places where you can find fresh local produce even in the off-season.

Birmingham 101: What will history say about us?

‘The city of perpetual promise.’ Does that mean incessant failure? Or rather, that Birmingham never gives up hope?
