London’s female killers

Looking to get your mind off the election? At 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, UAB history professor Caryolyn A. Conley will present a lecture titled “Female Killers in London, 1671-1913″ in Room 106 of UAB Heritage Hall.\

While doing research for her latest book, Certain Other Countries: Homicide, Gender and National Identity in Late-Victorian England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, Conley examined the trial transcripts of more than 1,200 women who were tried for homicide in London between 1671 and 1913.\

“I’ve found that the sorts of homicides women were accused of and the ways homicidal women were treated changed profoundly over time,” Conley said recently. “These changes are especially interesting in light of the way attitudes towards women and women’s roles changed over the same period.”\
