Music and Movies at the Alabama Theatre

By Carey Norris

Mick and KeithThe next three days feature a wide variety of music-themed movies at the Alabama Theatre, any one of which will please the music or movie fan in you. On Friday night, there’s a showing of Widespread Panic: Live at Oak Mountain, a concert film featuring the legendary jam band in concert in 2001with songs from their Don’t Tell the Band album. The movie starts at 8 p.m., and tickets cost $7.\

On Saturday night, you can see this year’s documentary Rolling Stones: Shine a Light. Directed by Martin Scorsese and shot by an army of renowned cinematographers, including Robert Richardson, Robert Elswit and Emmanuel Lubezki, the film was shot over the course of two days at New York’s Beacon Theatre in 2006. The aged, but still vital Stones show they still have the power to rock your socks off, and they do so with a few guests, ranging from Jack White to Christina\’a0Aguilera to Buddy Guy.\’a0Scorsese gives almost as intimate portrait of the Stones as he did with The Band in his landmark rock doc The Last Waltz. If you missed Shine a Light the first time it came through town a few months ago, don’t miss this chance. The film starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are $7.\

Sunday afternoon is Meet Me in St. Louis, the last film in the Alabama’s month-long series of musicals. The movie stars Judy Garland and Mary Astor as a family that has to leave St. Louis and move to New York just before the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair after the family’s patriarch receives a work transfer. The movie marked the debut of\’a0the song “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and has since\’a0become a Christmas classic. The film starts at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6.
