Art openings: Jennifer Hunt and UAB V.A.G.

There are two terrific openings tonight \’97 one in Southside and one in the suburbs.\

At Jennifer Hunt Gallery (in Cahaba Plaza across from Whole Foods), renowned photojournalist Charles Moore will be signing copies of Powerful Days, a collection of his photographs chronicling the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee from 1958-1965. Most of the 18 photographs currently on display at Jennifer Hunt Gallery were taken by Moore in Birmingham, during the infamous May 1963 demonstrations. The book signing and reception with Moore will run 6-7 p.m.; the reception continues until 8 p.m. The photo exhibition runs through Feb. 21.\

Starting on Friday, Jan. 9, the UAB Visual Arts Gallery is hosting a gallery exhibition and benefit featuring custom decorated skateboards, vinyl Munny Kidrobot toys and resin graffiti rail cars, all decorated by local and national artists. “Blank/Decks” begins with a reception from 5-7 p.m. with DJ Ken Webb of Urban Fabric providing the soundtrack. A silent auction for each piece of artwork also begins at the reception and continues through Friday, Jan. 30, the duration of the exhibition. Bidders must register at the gallery and will get a bid number. All works start at $75. The 30 artists invited to customize the boards and toys include Derek Cracco, Erin Wright, Doug Baulos,Clayton Colvin, John Fields, Walt Creel, Lloyd Cooper, Jane Timberlake, Pat Snow, Dan Bynum, Megan Kimber, Christopher Davis, Merrillee Challiss, Chatham Hellmers, Lisa Michitti, Amy Pleasant, Annie Butrus and more. The UAB Visual Arts Gallery is located at 900 13th St. South. For more information, call 205-934-0815.
