Music: Keaton Simons to perform at Workplay

By Brent Thompson

Singer/songwriter Keaton Simons has an impressive pedigree.\’a0 His grandfather wrote the 1975 award-winning film Three Days of the Condor, his mother appeared in Animal House, his father was a producer for the sitcom Malcolm In The Mimagesiddle, and his stepfather is actor Eric Roberts (Julia Roberts’ brother). But contacts and connections haven’t eased Simons’ path in the music business as label problems and substance problems have derailed his career in the past. But in 2008, Simons released the CD Can You Hear Me on CBS Records and has now caught the attention of listeners and industry insiders alike. Possessing songwriting, vocal and guitar skills, Simons offers a soulful sound that’s world-weary and hopeful at the same time. On Sunday, March 15, Simons will perform at Workplay in a triple-bill show with Tyrone Wells and Jason Reeves.\
\
Simons has appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Malcolm In The Middle, and American Dreams. In addition, his songs have appeared in several film soundtracks. Currently, Simons is on a nationwide tour and will also participate in the Hotel Cafe showcase at Austin’s famed South By Southwest festival in March.\
\
Tickets to the 8 p.m. show are $10 – $12 day of the show -\’a0 and can be purchased at www.workplay.com or by calling 380-4082.

Birmingham 101: What will history say about us?

‘The city of perpetual promise.’ Does that mean incessant failure? Or rather, that Birmingham never gives up hope?
