Langford takes homestead tax break (in Fairfield)
Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford and his wife took a homestead exemption on their Fairfield home in 2008, despite the mayor’s claims that he lives in the City of Birmingham.

The issue of Langford’s homestead exemption first arose in 2007, when Birmingham attorney Patrick Cooper filed a lawsuit challenging Langford’s election as Birmingham mayor. At the time, Jefferson County Circuit Judge Allwin Horn ruled that residency is defined largely by intent. Langford testified in court that he intended to move to Birmingham, so he met the legal requirements for residency, Horn said.
Since then, however, Langford has not sold his Fairfield home and in October 2008 he again claimed a homestead exemption on the house.
Property tax records from the Jefferson County Tax Assessor’s office are public documents subject to inspection upon request.
Mayor Langford has told the Birmingham City Council that he still receives mail at his Fairfield home and last month Birmingham Weekly recorded his personal vehicle in his Fairfield driveway on five separate occasions.
