Your move Alabama Power: TVA trims rates

By Weekly Staff

In October 2008, Alabama Power raised residential electricity rates by more than 8 percent, citing rising fuel costs in the wake of an active hurricane season. They weren’t the only energy conglomerate to do so, as the government-owned Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) upped their prices by nearly 20 percent.

TVA provides power for much of the northern third of Alabama with electricity generated through a series of dams and nuclear plants on the Tennessee River. Their services are not available to most in the Birmingham metro area, save for Bessemer and Tarrant (both cities buy electricity from the federally-owned corporation)

TVA announced this week that they are reducing their rates for the third time since October of last year, meaning that their customers will be paying roughly the same rates as they did before the energy crisis hit.

The question is: Will Alabama Power do the same? (Source: Birmingham News)

You can count on politicians to fight tooth and nail for any “free” money floating around. That’s what TVA’s “bribes” in lieu of taxes amounts to. North Alabama legislators want the money now being paid to “dry” counties in south Alabama from TVA funds to be diverted to northern counties, to those who actually use TVA electricity.
