The scoop on Birmingham ice cream shops

By Molly Folse

Ice cream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Good thing there’s plenty of it in and around Birmingham, from the good, old fashioned kind to gelato, sorbet and yogurt. For a frozen fest without the mess, there’s even ice cream cryogenically frozen into tiny beads.

mtn_brook_creamerySo how does one choose? The differences between the varieties of creamy, frozen fancies may be subtle, but they do make a difference in terms of taste, texture and total nutrition.

ICE CREAM: Ice cream is made from milk and cream with additional flavors and sweeteners. The smooth texture comes from the process where the mixture is stirred slowly as it cools off, preventing ice from forming. While gelato, yogurt and sorbet are often called ice cream, the distinction between each dessert lies in a few ingredients and the amounts used. American federal labeling standards require ice cream to contain a minimum of 10 percent milk fat and 20 percent total milk solids by weight.

YOGURT: Like ice cream, yogurt is made from milk but also contains live active cultures, or probiotics. Studies suggest that live active cultures may improve digestion and help your body absorb more nutrients.

GELATO: Gelato is served at a higher temperature and is more dense than ice cream. Gelato also includes more egg yolk and milk, but less cream. Although it has less fat than ice cream, it’s still rich and creamy.

SORBET: While sorbet doesn’t usually include any dairy ingredients, the combination of sweetened water flavored with iced fruit juice or puree, is a lower fat alternative to the creamier frozen treats. Sorbet flavors include many of the same ice cream-like selections like chocolate, vanilla, wine, liqueur, caramel and many more.

I'm pretty sure the Wright Dairy outlet and Clumpie's are both closed. You can still drive out to the Wright Dairy Farm near Neely Henry Dam and buy their ice cream in cartons, though.
  • Dystopos is right. I just called Clumpie's and the Wright Dairy outlet -- both numbers disconnected.

Did anyone actually edit and fact check this article, or did you just cut-and-paste from the online Yellow Pages?

Thanks to both WadeonBirmingham & Dystopos for your eagle-eyed edits!
I've deleted Clumpies from the listings but left Wright Dairy in case anyone wants info about farm tours.
  • Thank you.

I don't think Wright Dairy is offering tours any more. They do have an outlet store at the farm with their own dairy products and various other organic / hormone-free products they get from elsewhere.

Downtown denizens might also like to know that there's a Dippin' Dots vending machine in the lobby of the McWane Center...
  • You never know what interesting flavors you're going to find in Whole Foods gelato--no two days carry the same selection.

There's a fairly new icecream/smoothie place in 5 Points South. They also offer banana splits and fudge brownie sundaes. I wanted just a hot fudge sundae but they couldn't vary the formula.

Mountain Brook Creamery on Cahaba Road near the circle had at least 10 different chocolate variations yesterday and also offer 8-carb frozen yogurt.
