Lonnie Holley and more at East Lake Farmer’s Market

By Jesse Chambers

Do you enjoy succulent produce freshly harvested by local farmers? Stuff like squash, tomatoes, peaches and strawberries? Do you like fresh, home-baked pies, cookies and cinnamon rolls?

Fresh produce is available every Saturday at the East Lake farmers' market.

Fresh produce is available every Saturday at the East Lake farmers' market.

Would you like to sample these treats while strolling through a real family-friendly neighborhood market and enjoying live music? Then head for the parking lot of the East Lake United Methodist Church, at the corner of 78th Street and Second Avenue South, this Saturday, May 23, between 8 a.m. and noon, as the East Lake Farmers Market enters its fourth season. The market, we’re told, will be bigger and better than ever, and is becoming a symbol for some in East Lake of the area’s rebirth as a destination for artists and young couples in search of affordable housing. And there’s something new this year, a greater emphasis on visual art. Birmingham sculptor Lonnie “The Sandman” Holley will be on hand Saturday with art activities for kids taken from what he calls his “treasure box.” The market runs through Oct. 10. For more information, call (205) 836-3201 or visit www.peerinc.org.
