Hey, it could happen: A quarter of South’s energy could be renewable, group says

By Madison Underwood

By 2025, 25 percent of the energy produced in the South could come from locally available, renewable energy sources according to a report released by the World Resources Institute, the Southern Alliance for green_energy_reportClean Energy and Southface. According to a press release on the SACE website, the Southern states could “meet national renewable energy targets currently being discussed as part of upcoming federal energy legislation” in 2025 by installing new solar, wind, hydropower and biomass facilities. Currently, five percent of power generated in the South comes from renewable sources. A 20 percent increase in clean power in 15 years? We’re a bit skeptical. When running at capacity, only about 12 percent of Alabama Power’s energy comes from renewable sources (statistics from Wikipedia.org — I did a little math, feel free to check it), so don’t hold your breath — or do, if you want to avoid the coal particulates and ozone.
