The worst City Stages ever?

By Weekly Staff

The bad news keeps rolling on for City Stages. Last week, just days before the entertainment was set to begin, we learned that corporate ticket sales were off by as much as 60 percent, forcing the festival’s president, George McMillan, to ask the Birmingham City Council for a $250,000 cash transfusion. city-stages-feature

Today, McMillan told the Birmingham News that sales of day tickets were the weakest in the 21-year history of the event.

“I do not think we will come close to hitting our $800,000 admissions number,” McMillan told the News‘ Mary Colurso. “We projected $800,000, thinking we were being conservative. Apparently we didn’t take the economy into account enough.”

Whatever debt the event accrued in 2009 will be stacked on top of the roughly $550,000 red ink it carried into this year. Many fans were critical of this year’s lineup, which prominently featured classic rock acts such as Styx, REO Speedwagon, .38 Special and Lynyrd Skynyrd. (Source: Birmingham News)

‘The city of perpetual promise.’ Does that mean incessant failure? Or rather, that Birmingham never gives up hope?
