Actor and green activist Ed Begley, Jr., will serve as the keynote speaker for the Take Pride Statewide Conference, July 28-29, at the Vulcan Materials Center for Environmental Stewardship and Education at Samford University. The conference is organized by Birmingham-based non-profit Auntie Litter, Inc., and is designed to promote litter prevention and related environmental causes in Alabama.

Auntie Litter, Inc., has helped develop numerous environmental education programs based on the character of Auntie Litter, who is portrayed by the group’s executive director, Pat Mitchell. Most of their programs are designed to help reduce litter and increase awareness of recycling.

As the Weekly reported previously, Begley will also make an appearance at the Green Building Focus Conference and Expo, to be held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex on July 28-29. The conference is being organized by Birmingham firm Green Building Focus.

Auntie Litter, Inc., was recently honored in the Aha Moment Campaign sponsored by the Mutual of Omaha insurance company, according to another release from the group.  Apparently, the Aha Moment campaign involves sending a mobile film studio housed in a 34-foot Airstream trailer around the U.S. in search of “amazing, uplifting, inspirational stories from people who have discovered their possibilities and made a move to make a change in their life or their communities.” The Airsteam appeared in Auntie Litter’s parking lot in Homewood on June 1 to honor executive director and long-time green activist Mitchell.
