Recycling center finds partners, makes improvements

By Alyssa Mitchell

The Alabama Environmental Council announced this week that it has joined forces with American Recycling of Alabama, Brothers Recycling and Allied Waste Haulers to make it more efficient for eco-lovers to recycle. Instead of sorting paper into five aec_logofreaking different bins, patrons of the Downtown Birmingham Community Recycling Center can now put all of their paper into a single compacting machine. The machine was provided by Allied Waste Haulers, who will haul the cubes off to American Recycling of Alabama in Bessemer. Pretty sweet deal, huh? Not only can tree huggers now recycle aluminum and steel cans, they can bring that back bumper that finally fell off and all other scrap metal to the center and put it in the new steel receptacles provided by Brothers Recycling. The Birmingham recycling center is still the only location in central Alabama taking glass products (except for that wine bottle you shattered last night because you too drunk to hold it). However, the only plastics currently accepted are types one and two. Flip the item over and check the label on the bottom. Types three through seven cannot be accepted at this time. (Remember that the center accepts computer parts, appliances and, of course, printer cartridges for pickup by electronics recycler Technical Knockout.) The Downtown Birmingham Community Recycling Center is located at 2431 Second Avenue North.

‘The city of perpetual promise.’ Does that mean incessant failure? Or rather, that Birmingham never gives up hope?
