JeffCo repeals sales tax holiday

By Kyle Whitmire

Throughout the state, shoppers will have a three-day sales tax holiday later this summer, but not in Jefferson County. Tuesday morning the Jefferson County Commission rescinded the sales tax break. Commissioners cited the county’s dire financial situation as reason for the tax hike.

A legal battle in state court left Jefferson County without its occupational tax, and sewer revenues are not enough to pay Wall Street for money the county has borrowed through years. Both problems have left the county on the precipice of bankruptcy, and deep cuts to the county budget might not be enough to keep the county solvent.

Commission President Bettye Fine Collins introduced the resolution to repeal the tax holiday. She and commissioners Shelia Smoot and William Bell voted to approve the resolution. Commissioner Bobby Humphryes voted against it. Commissioner Jim Carns was absent.

“For months we have warned the public that we would come to this day,” Collins said.

To put the vote on the agenda at the last minute, Collins needed a vote of unanimous consent from her colleagues. Commissioner Humphryes could have killed the resolution in that vote, but he opted instead to let it come up for discussion.

“History has proven that recessions are depressions are a bad time to raise taxes,” Humphryes said. “I think this is more or less an increase in taxes on the people.”

According to Collins, the extra revenue will keep the county from having to lay off seven more employees.

Wow, I never knew Betty Fine was such a handsome lady. The deadbeats of Jefferson County, as we will all be known soon. Maybe we'll get a reality tv show.

So why not have a fundraiser where you get to throw a pie at your local government leaders. I for one would pay top dollar to throw something at La La, BFC, et. al.

Another item on the same agenda was to adjust the pay to Bradley Arant from $3 million to $4 million and "(no additional funds required)" meaning they were budgeted for it. So they're laying people off, reduced the 40 hour work week for hourly employees to 32 hours, have NOT adjusted the pay for the top heavy salaried employees (including the $400,000/year County Attorney -- highest paid public servant in the state), only one commissioner has laid off an office employee, and no one has parked the first County vehicle yet.

How do we impeach these people?
