Four million tires moved from Alabama disposal site
The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) announced last week that a cleanup of the state’s largest unauthorized scrap tire disposal site is complete. According to an ADEM news 
release, more than 82 million pounds of tire materials — the equivalent of about four million automobile tires — were removed from a site in Attalla formerly occupied by a wholesale tire company. C.W. Owens Enterprises of Southside, Alabama, carried out the cleanup, which took nearly three years. According to ADEM, Owens Enterprises was able to find what is referred to as “beneficial reuse” for over 80 percent of the material. The job was funded by the Alabama Scrap Tire Fund, which was established by the legislature in 2003 and is supported by a fee of $1 collected on the sale of each replacement tire in the state.
