Is the new urbanism good for your health?

By Jesse Chambers

Maybe it’s just me, but I usually associate the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta with boring epidemiological studies or with stuff like AIDS or swine flu. But the CDC has now teamed up with those city-dwelling, pedestrian-loving, mass transit-using geeks at the Congress for the New Urbanism for a big conference in Atlanta in May 2010. The CNU’s 18th annual congress – organized with assistance from the CDC – is called “New Urbanism: Rx for Healthy Places.” According to a CNU release, “the opportunities and challenges of designing and developing communities that promote healthy lives will be explored.” For more information, about the CDC’s Healthy Community Design Initiative, go to www.cdc.gov/healthyplaces.
