I am an Alabama native who has been living in Louisiana for 30 years now. My brother works for Jefferson County and in one of the employees to be furloughed. I have a few questions - Has the mainsterm local media been bringing this to the voters attention before now?
And, maybe more importantly, why is the Alabama legislature involved in deciding Jefferson or any other county's taxing authority? That is a measure the voters of the county should decide not the legislature.
You guys are making us look pretty good these days - should I say thank you?

The city council and the co. commissioners are playing "chicken" with the citizens, and that will come back to bite their butts! They are no different than the rest of us, in that we ALL have to learn to do more with less. I hate that the rank and file employees are used as pawns like this, but I hope they will hang tough, and give this mess time to resolve itself. The off time could be used to consider who we will vote for, and replace these morons with people who understand the concept of public service!

Thank you for yet another well-crafted analysis, Kyle. It's wonderful not to have to disentangle and lay out clearly all the threads of this calamity. You save me time--and spare my contacts confusion.

Fellow Countians, call your legislators to reinforce the need to produce a bill to deal with this process. Also, you can join county employees 8-9 a.m., on Monday morning at the Innovation Depot to let officials know you want a solution to this crisis which affects not only employees but vendors and service providers and recipients of occuational tax fuds (Meet on 14th St. N. side, between 1st and 2nd Aves N.).

A very well written and fair telling of the story. Rumor today is that the two thirds of employees has now changed to 96% of the remaining employees.
