Hey, man, cool threads!

By Jesse Chambers

Tiffany Denton, a Nashville-based fiber artist, has used recycled textiles to create an art project called “Wasted Thread,” to be displayed at Blend Studio in Nashville from Aug. 1-29. Blend Studio is located in the historic Arcade building in the gallery district in downtown Nashville.

material_3According to a recent news release from Blend, Denton’s “Wasted Thread” is “a collaborative, community-based recycling art project.” People in the Nashville area and even surrounding states have been encouraged to participate by donating old clothing and fabrics. The show is designed to raise awareness of the need for textile recycling, something that is often forgotten in the rush to recycle plastic, glass, aluminum and other materials.

The release points out that some items of clothing that are too old or worn to donate to a charity or to your local thrift store may still contain usable fabric.

To learn more about “Wasted Thread,” call Blend at (615) 554-1340 or visit www.blendstudio.wordpress.com or www.wastedthread.blogspot.com. To read about textile recycling, go to www.textilerecycle.org.

Birmingham 101: What will history say about us?

‘The city of perpetual promise.’ Does that mean incessant failure? Or rather, that Birmingham never gives up hope?
