Birmingham Bingo Bust

By Weekly Staff

It’s 6 a.m. on a Monday. Do you know where your bingo is?

Monday morning, about 60 patrons were playing away at a Roebuck VFW bingo hall when state authorities raided the establishment. slot-machinesAgents from the ABI and state police have been investigating the bingo parlor for about a month at the request of Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls.

Several cities in Jefferson County, including Birmingham, have passed ordinances to legalize bingo, but Falls has told the Birmingham City Council that the local ordinances do not supersede state law.

Falls told The Birmingham News that the Roebuck facility appeared more like a casino than a charity. Agents seized as many as 1,000 machines.

The Birmingham City Council has postponed granting new bingo permits until after the council election later this month.

There was a huge problem with where this facility chose to locate! The parking lot was jammed, and those of us who wanted to visit the other stores there had to either walk two blocks or park illegally to pick up a pizza or prescription.I think that they should move it to the other side of McRaes, where there are fewer merchants and lots of available parking.

well with all the people in Alabama needing jobs and the lack of industry jobs. Seems like such places would hire lots of worker and pay on a up scale pay rate. Such things as insurances, benifits, etc. would help the people of Alabama greatly. People must remember that much of the money will go to the Birmingham schools and make it easier on people that can't aford to carry the cost of supplies that the schools don't have the budget to pay themselfs. I can only state if you don't support Charity Bingo then you might not want to go to one yourself LOL LOL. Welcome to Alabama

Well, it seems that the bingo lottery was won by the police this time. I sincerely can't understand why bingo is not legal as long as other gambling games are.
