Birmingham Bingo Bust
By Weekly Staff
It’s 6 a.m. on a Monday. Do you know where your bingo is?
Monday morning, about 60 patrons were playing away at a Roebuck VFW bingo hall when state authorities raided the establishment.
Agents from the ABI and state police have been investigating the bingo parlor for about a month at the request of Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls.
Several cities in Jefferson County, including Birmingham, have passed ordinances to legalize bingo, but Falls has told the Birmingham City Council that the local ordinances do not supersede state law.
Falls told The Birmingham News that the Roebuck facility appeared more like a casino than a charity. Agents seized as many as 1,000 machines.
The Birmingham City Council has postponed granting new bingo permits until after the council election later this month.
