Birmingham City Council cuts deal with green manufacturer

By Madison Underwood

An Atlanta-based manufacturer of environmentally-friendly construction materials will build a new manufacturing facility in Birmingham, according to an incentive agreement approved by the Birmingham City Council on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Birmingham will return up to $150,000 of occupational taxes over 10 years to the company, which is called Green Solar Manufacturing.

solar_panel“Green Solar selected Birmingham as an expansion site upon realizing that we are a progressive city with a progressive mayor and via the efforts of our Economic Development Division of the Mayor’s office,” April Odom, a spokesperson for Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford, wrote in an e-mail to Birmingham Weekly.

The facility, which will be located at 31 First Avenue North, will be 70,000 square feet, including a 13,000 square foot training facility. In three years, the facility is expected to employ 150 workers. The mayor’s office expects the facility to operational within 18 months.

In addition to rebated occupational taxes, the city of Birmingham agreed to spend up to $1,000 to build parking lots for the Green Solar facility on land surrounding the plant.

Green Solar is reported to already have one plant in Georgia, but this could not be verified before press time as Birmingham Weekly was unable to locate any contact information for the company. Georgia incorporation records show that Green Solar Manufacturing filed for incorporation less than a month ago. However, a parent company, Green Solar Companies, incorporated in 2007.

  • Will the lot be a pervious surface--like dirt or porous concrete?

Too bad there's not more bus service to cut back on the need for big parking lots.

a little concerned that the city council just made a deal with a company Green Solar, that I can't seem to find so much as a phone number for, a little more concerned that the only connection to this company in birmingham is a partnership from last year with a faith based non profit run by Rev. Thomas L. Moore, that supports an ATLANTA based (http://www.triumphthechurchnatl.org/Foreign%20M...) Triumph Church Mission School in Monrovia, Liberia, Africa whose only evidence of existence is a clip of a structure being built (not finished) in 2008- the same time the alabama organization partnered with the atl based solar company, that still can't be located.
