Activists hang out, or something

By Jesse Chambers

So the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced the planting of one billion trees. That’s cool. We got the release. But the release isn’t from the U.N. It’s from a PR firm. It tells us that two famous activists for education and the environment were “united” at the UNEP presser on Sept. 29. I guess that means that they hung out. Marilyn Mosley Gordanier, founder of the Laurel Springs School in Ojai, Calif., and Wangari Mathai, winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize, are the activists in question. The PR firm works for them, I think. Anyway, the two women met before, when they spoke at a big U.N. conference in 1992. Mathai, you see, had been awarded the UNEP Global 500 award in 1987 for her work in Kenya, helping women and families plant 40 million trees through the work of her organization, the Green Belt Movement. Mosley Gordanier’s school had won the same award in 1990 for an outstanding environmental education program. So, I don’t know what they did this time. Maybe they went for sushi. Learn more about their organizations at www.laurelsprings.com and www.greenbeltmovement.org.

Birmingham 101: What will history say about us?

‘The city of perpetual promise.’ Does that mean incessant failure? Or rather, that Birmingham never gives up hope?
