Renew our rivers

A few volunteer opportunities remain in the 2009 Renew Our Rivers waterway clean-up program sponsored by Alabama Power.

FLOWER_the_rainAccording to the company’s web site, there’s a clean-up scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 3, 8 a.m.-noon, at the Harris Reservoir near Lake Wedowee. Volunteers should meet at the Highway 48 boat ramp. For information, call (256) 357-2656 or (256) 396-5093.

There will be a clean-up on Fri., Oct. 9, at the Miller Steam Plant on the Locust Fork near Birmingport. Call (205) 288-4562.

The year’s final event will take place Oct. 24, 8 a.m.-noon, at Higgins Ferry Park on Lake Mitchell. Call (205) 960-5083 or (205) 755-6432.

Renew Our Rivers is one of the Southeast’s largest organized river system clean-ups, with events in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Florida. For information, go to www.alabamapower.com and search “renew our rivers.”
