Great piece, Kyle. Whatever personal and/or political reasons Ms. Smitherman has for her 'measured' response to Langford and his crimes has fatally injured her chances of higher office.

She's become the poster child for the 'Hear No Evil . . .See No Evil . . Speak No Evil . ." for Birmingham,'s leadership that your story describes so well.

Can't help but wonder how Smitherman can try to look good through this scenario. The City is broke? Consider who was Council President and Chair of the Finance Committee when the city went from having reserves and a good bond rating under Mayor Kincaid (all without new taxes), to having budget deficits.
Who supported the Langford agenda? Who voted to raise taxes? Who was supposed to be "minding the store"? Carole Smitherman.

Wonderful article, Kyle. As to Smitherman's last statement, it makes me wonder - what actually happens when a city runs out of money?

Paepcke was being a jerk. I'm sorry, but that's the nicest way I can put it.

Not to defend the former mayor, but there is a real difference between criticism and being a jerk. This publication, the Weekly, has maintained quite a bit of dignity and professionalism, yet nobody could within reason argue that you have neglected your constitutional duty as free press to hold the administration accountable. You've done a good job of pointing out all the ugly warts.

I suppose that's why Paepcke stood out so much. Aside from the Weekly, no other new source in the area has really challenged Langford in the way he needed to be challenged, and then Paepcke came out of nowhere and asked his question, which really served no other purpose THEN than to point out how stupid the idea was and to take a jab at Langford. Where was the question about the absurdity of the Olympics when Langford was putting it in the budget-- when it would have mattered? It sure as hell wasn't on NBC 13.

And the News was apparently shocked today that there was a shortfall in the budget. I've already commented on how anyone who was paying attention shouldn't have been shocked. It was covered pretty darn well here.

If anyone has a right to any amount of Schadenfreude in all this, it's the Weekly-- not Jon Paepcke.

This is an insightful and damning piece. Well done, Kyle.

The big question: Who will lead Birmingham next, and will that person be able to begin to fill the crater left by Langford and company?
