Alabama’s Cahaba River is “as fascinating as any jungle,” Michelle Nijhuis writes in the July issue of Smithsonian Magazine. Her article, “The Cahaba: A River of Riches,” praises the river’s species diversity and features an interview with Randy Haddock, a biologist. Haddock was the first to discover that the sphinx moth was responsible for pollinating the Cahaba lily, a flower that Nijhuis pays special attention to in her story. The article also notes that Alabama leads the nation in species extinctions. You can read the article online at www.smithsonianmag.com
