This announcement came recently when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released its annual Candidate Notice of Review, a yearly appraisal of the current status of plants and animals that are considered for inclusion in the ESA.
According to an FWS news release, candidate species are plants and animals which the government has reason to believe are threatened or endangered. These species are not immediately given full-fledged endangered status, but the feds work to conserve them. As part of this review, the FWS will solicit additional information on these species.
