a great event for every day

Yet another good FUNdraiser comes our way with the third installment of Beer on the Backporch at the Ruffner Mountain Nature Center. Make sure and come out to support the nature center it’s only 20 dollars a person and it includes food, beer and music all from local vendors and artists. Everyone will be hanging out and enjoying the festivities on the picnic pavilion so do not be left out. The fundraiser starts at 6pm and runs until 10pm.

18 FRI

Once Upon a Blue Moon Make-A-Wish foundation is one of my favorite charities so today stop by Park Lane to help support this wonderful charity. Food and drinks will be provided by Kathy G Catering and there will be live music as well. Also there is the chance to win great prizes such as SEC championship tickets, signed AU football, Gym memberships and a lot more . If you are not already familiar with the Make-A- Wish Foundation it gives children whom are facing life threatening diseases and cancers the opportunity to enjoy some of the things in life we take for granted by allowing them to meet celebrities they idolize or trips to Disney World for example. This is a fantastic opportunity to help out kids get through a tough time in their young lives. Tickets are only $30 so come out and make a child’s wish come true. Please wear something blue!

19 SAT

Tragic City Rollers. Looking for something a little different to do tonight? Look no further than Birmingham’s own roller derby team, the Tragic City Rollers. The Rollers will do battle with the Savannah Derby Devils tonight at the Zamora Shrine Temple. If you have never been to a roller derby match I can vouch for the amount of excitement which will be endured and it is a great deal. Roller derby is taken very seriously by the participants and it shows in the punishment they are willing to put their bodies through for a victory. So go check it out tonight as tickets are only $10. Please call 205-534-0166 for more information.

20 SUN

If our weather holds up this will be a great event for parents and kids alike. Head out to the Alabama Wildlife Center to view what this beautiful state has to offer in the way of nature. Emmy award-winning APT series “Discovering Alabama” creator Doug Philips will be on hand to guide you through Oak Mountain State Park on a nature walk to observe the wildlife that is active this time of year. The leaves are starting to turn and now is the time to get out before it becomes too cold so make sure and bring your binoculars too. Phone: 205-663-7930, Ext. 4

21 MON

Are you ready for some football?! I know Birmingham isn’t much of an NFL city but tonight I am suggesting Monday Night Football and half priced wings at Fox n’ Hound in the Colonnade. It will cost about $5 for a dozen wings and couple that with their beer specials for happy hour which lasts until 7 and it will be a good time. Monday night football for me has always been a good way to get rid of a dreaded case of the “Mondays.” In addition, I’m sure one of my favorite bartenders Megan or Cici will be on hand to take care of your food and drink whims. Make it happen.

22 TUES

UAB Football. Pass me the rock! In state rivals UAB Blazers and Troy will face off tonight at Bartow Arena at 7pm. This is the third game in the opening series at home before the Blazers’ first away game on the 25th at Wichita State. This year should be a good one for the Blazers as they are already picked to make the NCAA tournament this year by many. Come show support for the local team tonight as general admission tickets are only $15 and $20 for the lower level. Please call 205-975-UAB1 for more information.

23 WED

Ballet at the Movies! Have you got a lot of family in town for Thanksgiving and getting kind of stir crazy having everyone in the house? Go check out the Ballet in Cinema Series at Carmike in the Summit. The series, which broadcasts ballets live in HD from around the world will present The Sleeping Beauty live from the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. Definitely something unique and interesting that shouldn’t be missed and would be great for the whole family, including obnoxious cousins. Please check with Carmike Theater at the Summit for the show time as it is broadcast live from Russia. Presented at The  Carmike Summit 16, 321 Summit Blvd. Tickets are $20 or $17 for groups.

24 THURS

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! I will not lecture you on the importance of Thanksgiving and how the Pilgrims came to America, etc, etc. Instead I will say only that it feels better to give than receive and in this time of year please donate food, clothing or cash to those that are less fortunate than you. The Jimmie Hale Mission accepts all of these donations and is located at 3420 2nd Ave N Birmingham, AL 35222 (205) 324-2271. And after that, eat lots of turkey and my personal favorite pecan pie! Have a great Holiday.
