a great event for every day

23 WED

Ballet in Cinema Have you got a lot of family in town for Thanksgiving and getting kind of stir crazy having everyone in  the house? Go check out the Ballet in Cinema Series at Carmike in the Summit. The series, which broadcasts ballets live in HD from around the world will present The Sleeping Beauty live from the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. Definitely something unique and interesting that shouldn’t be missed and would be great for the whole family, including obnoxious cousins. Please check with Carmike Theater at the Summit for the show time as it is broadcast live from Russia. Presented at The Carmike Summit 16, 321 Summit Blvd. Tickets are $20 or $17 for groups.

24 THURS

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! I will not lecture you on the importance of Thanksgiving and how the Pilgrims came to America, etc, etc. Instead I will say only that it feels better to give than receive and in this time of year please donate food, clothing or cash to those that are less fortunate than you. The Jimmie Hale Mission accepts all of these donations and is located at 3420 2nd Ave N Birmingham, AL 35222 (205) 324-2271. And after that, eat lots of turkey and my personal favorite pecan pie!

Have a great Holiday.

JJ has worked with some of the “Kangs” of Comedy, Steve Harvey and D.L Hugley as well as Chris Tucker so his comedic prowess has accreditation and is still growing. He has toured all over the U.S. and will be here tonight so make sure and come out to get some laughs with your family that is still lingering at the house. Show is only 20 bucks and starts at 7:30.

Iron Bowl Touted as the biggest rivalry in college football by most, The Iron Bowl is always a big game and a big deal for the state of Alabama. Given what has happened last week in the BCS this game is a must win for Bama if they are going to play LSU in the title game. This year is the 76th Iron Bowl and it is going to be played at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn. I guess I could have picked something else a little more “local” for this 8 days installment but seriously, why would I do that?

27 SUN

Great Southern Gun and Knive Show. When I was younger and living in Louisiana my dad would always take me to the Great Southern Gun and Knife Show when it came through Shreveport. Since I have lived here in Birmingham I have been three times to the show at the BJCC and it is always a good one. With hunting season upon us and Christmas right around the corner it’s always fun to go check out guy stuff you know dad will spring for. So if you’re looking for a new Winchester 700 mag or maybe a Benelli SuperNova go check out the show. The show opens Saturday from 9 – 5 and today from 10 – 4.

28 MON

Snow is in the forecast at McWane Science Center this year with the return of the Winter Wonderland exhibit. There is tons of fun to be had today from 10-5 at the McWane Center with real actual snow, ice fishing and much more. I realize the kids are back in school this week but if you have the opportunity to take a kid that hasn’t seen snow before then this is pretty cool. Also there is a huge slide from the third to second floor and even a zip line. Maybe you could even visit this winter wonderland on your lunch break? Tuesday, November 29th, 2011.

29 TUES

Bonamassa concert It’s going to be a good Tuesday as the much anticipated Joe Bonamassa concert will be at the BJCC. Joe has grown his reputation as one of the world’s greatest guitar players over the last few decades. He has played with just about everyone from Eric Clapton to B.B. King, first opening for King when he was only 12 years old. Being the vast guitar talent that he is it is sure to be a great show. I’ve been looking forward to this one, if you haven’t entered our concert online for free tickets and a signed guitar go to www.bhamweekly.com. There are many ranges of ticket prices so check Ticketmaster or give the BJCC a call. See you there.

30 WED

Iranian detainees tell their experience. Everyone has heard of and seen the news stories about the three American hikers which were detained and imprisoned in Iran for alleged espionage a little over two years ago. Conversely, hopefully everyone saw that the last two of the three to be released have been free since Sept. 21st. For the first time since their harrowing international ordeal the three hikers, Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal will be speaking on an American college campus, which just so happens to be at UAB’s Bartow Arena tonight at 7pm. So make it a point to come hear their tale of survival and never giving up hope that is sure to be mesmerizing and eye-opening as well.
