a great event for every day

Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus at the BJCC A great day to head out to the Greatest Show on Earth, Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus is at the BJCC through Sunday. I went for the first time as a kid few years ago and now I get to take my daughter. It never gets old and to be able to share it with Katherine makes it even more special. We love the Clowns running around do hilarious antics, the death defining high wire stunts and the flying trapeze artists. The elephants, tigers, lions, horses and dogs all performing incredible acts and this year it’s all paired with the Dragon. One of my favorite things is a motorcycle stunt where eight motorcycle riders defy gravity and severe harm while racing all at once in a steel caged ball that doesn’t seem large enough to hold two bikes, let alone eight. And then there is the cotton candy, popcorn, hot dogs and a coke to wash it all down, somehow it all tastes better at the Circus.

Salamander Festival in Homewood When I was a kid, I loved to head out in the woods and look for snakes, toads and lizards. What fun it is to see the real thing in the wild. But even better, get close up and personal with real Salamanders at the Salamander Festival today at the Homewood Community Center from 3pm to 5:30pm. Learn about fish, frogs, turtles and snakes. This is a must for kids, plus they can try their hand at creating nature crafts for free! Music, Food, a Zulu Dancing demonstration, fossil track and flower display, a great time will be had by all all!

29 SUN

Bobby Collins The Comedy Club Stardome in Hoover Once again, we have a big name comedian performing here in the Magic City.

Bobby Collins is hilarious and has a great following as well. Laughing out loud with this crowd is a hoot. Bobby has a cult following and the crowd can be as much fun as the show. With more than 200 stand-up performances across the country each year, Collins has hit the stage from concert halls to cruise ships. He’s been on TV shows and in movies, including last year’s “I Am Comic,” and has opened for celebs such as Frank Sinatra, Cher, Tony Bennett and Julio Iglesias. Collins’ comedic style lies in his humorous observations about everyday life. He’ll be performing all weekend, but you’ll catch me at Sunday’s show.

Tickets are only $19 and if you use promo code Bob, you’ll receive $5 off!

Stillwater Pub Trivia Why not start your work week off by feeding your brain a healthy dose of useless trivia and beer? Stillwater Pub hosts Trivia Night with Berkley on Monday nights. Being the scholar that I am, and constantly feeling the need to share my indubitable brilliance with the rest of the world, I attend regularly. You can go rogue or team up with geniuses like me to answer questions ranging from quantum entanglement theories to Mario Kart. Things generally get started around 10:00pm but get there early so you can team up with super smart people like me.

Cheap Laughs at Zydeco After barraging your brain with booze and questioning, why not sit back and have a good laugh at the Cheap Laughs comedy show that is coming to Zydeco this Tuesday night. The show’s headliner is Birmingham native Zach Caradine and will feature the likes of comedians Tollie Jones, Noa Helmandottar, and Brian Warren. The laughs are cheap, but the drinks will cost you something. The show is 18+ and starts at 9:30pm.

St. Patricks Day is right around the corner and I’ve been craving some great Irish Music and another pint or two of beer! Tonight at Workplay enjoy Galic Storm. The band takes pride in the fact that their music and performances are a celebration of Irish culture as well as a medium of connection to the more than 36 million Irish-Americans in the United States. Gaelic Storm plays Celtic music that hearkens back to the traditional music of Ireland, they are hardly traditionalists, adding modern sounds and drawing influences from American rock and pop as well as music styles from around the world. So let’s lift a pint together and enjoy the Galic Storm rolling through Birmingham at Workplay!

Its Groundhog Day, Will Birmingham Bill see his shadow? Traditionally, if a groundhog emerges from its hole on Groundhog Day, then winter will soon end.

However, if that groundhog retreats back into its hole, then winter will continue for another six weeks. I’m headed to the Birmingham Zoo to see for myself if Birmingham Bill retreats back into his hole or stays out to enjoy the day. Get there early to place your prediction in the prediction box, make a craft and enjoy hot coco and coffee. There will also be photo opportunities before and after the show with Birmingham Bill. Activities start at 9:30am and the show starts at 10am. And regardless of his action, I hope that Spring will come soon and the flowers will be in bloom for all to enjoy! Have a great week.
