Former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy has returned to Birmingham to defend himself in a civil lawsuit in state court.

The Associate Press reports that Scrushy is being held in the Shelby County Jail. He was transported there from the federal prison in Beaumont, Texas, where he is serving a seven-year sentence for bribing Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman.

Scrushy could testify in the civil trial. Plaintiffs have accused Scrushy of participating in more than $2.7 billion of accounting fraud at HealthSouth. In 2005, a federal jury acquitted Scrushy of criminal charges that he participated in the fraud.

The civil trial begins Monday in Birmingham.

Birmingham Weekly will cover the trial.
